Weekend Workshop for All Levels:
Tombak and Daf with Mohammad Reza Mortazavi
November 7–9, 2025 – Berlin
In this unique workshop with Mohammad Reza Mortazavi, the focus is on the connection between concentration and letting go – two fundamental principles of his artistic and pedagogical approach. In addition, participants will learn both essential playing techniques and innovative techniques developed by Mortazavi himself.
The workshop is open to all levels: beginners as well as advanced players with prior experience on Tombak or Daf are warmly welcome. The aim is to enter a shared musical space where, through concentration, release, and technical exploration, music can emerge.

Mohammad Reza Mortazavi will give a short exclusive concert for the participants.
Saturday & Sunday, November 8 & 9, from 10:00:
Practical workshop sessions (approx. 4 hours each, with a break).

Special Feature
The workshop is designed as a starting point for an ongoing collaborative music project. Mortazavi will create ensemble compositions and arrangements especially for the participants, which can later be rehearsed and performed together.
For Beginners
Those with no prior experience on Tombak or Daf can join a free introductory module (by prior arrangement) to prepare specifically for the workshop.

Composer and musician Mohammad Reza Mortazavi offers group lessons for Tombak and Daf. Neither age nor previous musical experience is important. Participants are invited to perceive making and listening to music in a variety of ways. The aim is to find a common musical reference point and thus find a balance between concentration and letting go.

An individual masterclass is aimed specifically at professional musicians who want to develop both compositional and playing skills. The masterclass can be based on tonbak and daf. It can also take place independently of the instrument with the focus on knowledge transfer.

The workshops are usually open to 20 participants. In special cases also for more people. The workshop is designed to be accessible to people with different musical backgrounds, similar to the group lessons. Making music together builds on a basic rhythm. The aim is to find a common pulse in which everyone can find themselves. Everyone can try out different playing styles and accents individually. The focus, however, remains on listening to each other.
